The Government Big Data Solutions Award was established to highlight innovative solutions and facilitate the exchange of best practices, lessons learned and creative ideas for addressing Big Data challenges. The top five nominees and overall winner was announced at Hadoop World in New York City on November 8 2011.

The Government Big Data Solutions Award Program is coordinated by CTOLabs.com.  The 2011 judging panel included: Doug Cutting, creator of Apache Hadoop and architect at Cloudera, Alan Wade, former CIA and IC CIORyan LaSalle, Director of Accenture Cyber R & D, Ed Granstedt, Senior VP Director of the QinetiQ Strategic Solutions Center and Chris Dorobek, founder, editor and publisher of DorobekInsider.com.

One of the top nominees for this year’s award was GSE Federal, a provider of cloud financial management solutions to government agencies. GSE Federal leverages Hadoop, MapReduce, and the firm’s own high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure to process transactional and analytical Big Data for clients including the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the General Services Administration, the United States Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Federal Air Marshals.

The GCE Cloud delivers scalable computing to fit the changing needs of any sized agency and is  5 to 10 times faster than mainstream disk and switch technologies thanks to state-of-the-art, Flash-based, solid-state disks and Infiniband switches. GCE’s cloud-based solutions are also cost effective, with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission expecting to save at least 40% in the first year of implementation alone. The GSE Cloud environment is designed with strict access controls to every layer of the Shared Service Platform (SSP) Appliance and all user requests and integrating systems are authenticated, checked against user roles, and logged for auditing. Using cloud and Big Data technology, GSE Federal improves federal financial management without sacrificing information security.
