Picture this scenario: you’re responsible for protecting the data of numerous business users, who create that data onClouds multiple devices like desktops, laptops, phones, tablets and even cloud applications. You worked diligently to put a solution in place that ensures that all of this data is secured, backed-up and easily recovered. You went with a cloud solution because you didn’t necessarily want to build and maintain the infrastructure of an on-premise solution. After all, your resources are limited and you don’t want to deal with the hassles of daily maintenance. So you find a managed service provider who recommends a cloud based backup solution. Everything is running great, until you receive an unexpected email indicating that your provider has discontinued their service. What do you do next?

Cloudy Conditions

Recently Symantec made a decision to discontinue their cloud based backup solution and are recommending their end users resort to an on premise solution. Is this a step backwards? In our opinion, there are several inconveniences that have arisen from this announcement. A few for example:

  • Managed Service Providers must reach out to their customers and notify them that they require a new backup solution because their existing cloud based solution is no longer offered – this puts the Service Provider in an awkward situation that nobody wants to experience
  • Managed Service Providers must either find a new cloud solution or suggest an on premise one – and why would they suggest an on-prem solution when their customers want a cost effective cloud-based solution
  • If you’re running Symantec Backup Exec.cloud you will have to find a new cloud solution or revert to an on-premise solution

Why On-Premise is a Pain

One might consider that going from a cloud solution, where your data is backed up in multiple locations, and accessible almost instantly, and without the need to manage any internal infrastructure, to an on-premise solution is a step in the reverse direction. At Asigra, we’re baffled to understand why anyone would consider this solution considering that almost every technology is headed to the cloud, and cloud technology is not only becoming more mainstream, it’s also more affordable, easier to manage and trust worthy.

There is a Silver Lining

So let’s get back to our first scenario. How do you avoid your backup provider from abandoning the cloud and from abandoning you? Well for starters, Asigra has fostered a strong worldwide ecosystem of multiple partners (in the hundreds) who all provide a secure cloud backup and recovery solution. What does this mean? In the unlikely event your provider closes up shop, you are only a phone call away from finding a local Asigra Partner and an easy transition.
