Every article on this subject opens with a number. Instagram uses X MB a minute, Y MB an hour. Those numbers disagree with each other, and they disagree for a good reason: the app’s traffic is almost entirely video, and video volume depends on your resolution, your connection speed, how much of the feed autoplays before you scroll past it, and whether Reels has eaten your session. An average built from someone else’s habits does not describe your bill.

So this guide does two things. It explains how to reduce Instagram data usage with nine changes, ordered by how much traffic each one can plausibly remove, and then it walks you to the screen on your own phone that reports what Instagram actually consumed. The ordering rests on Instagram’s own documentation for its data settings and on how adaptive video streaming behaves on a mobile connection, not on stopwatch runs; we have not measured the app in a lab and are not going to pretend otherwise. Where a figure would be a guess, you get a menu path instead.

The short answer: how to reduce Instagram data usage
Open Instagram, go to Settings and activity, find the data usage and media quality section, and turn on the option to use less mobile data. That stops video preloading over cellular, which is the single largest saving available. Then keep Reels off mobile data, turn off high-quality uploads, and restrict background refresh. Video is the cost. Photos are rounding error.

Menu wording moves between Instagram versions and between iOS and Android. Where the label on your phone differs from the one below, the section is the one dealing with data and media quality; the toggle inside is the one described. Nothing here requires a third-party app.
1. Turn on the setting that reduces mobile data use
What it does
By default the app fetches video ahead of your thumb. It is a good decision for engagement and a bad one for your allowance, because preloaded clips you scroll past still arrived. Turning this on tells the app to stop speculating while you are on cellular and to fetch video when you actually stop on it. Wi-Fi behaviour is unchanged.
How to turn it on
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture.
- Tap the menu icon at the top, then Settings and activity.
- Scroll to the entry covering Data usage and media quality. On older builds this lives under Account as Cellular data use or Mobile data use.
- Turn on Use less mobile data (labelled Data Saver in earlier versions).
What you give up
A short wait before each video starts, and more visible buffering on a weak signal. That is the entire trade. If you scroll quickly through a video-heavy feed, this is the largest single reduction on the list, because you stop paying for content you never watched.
2. Keep Reels on Wi-Fi
What it does
No setting will save you if you spend forty minutes in a vertical video feed on a mobile connection. This is the one item on the list that is a habit rather than a toggle, and it is here at number two because the arithmetic is unavoidable: minutes of video are the product, and you are buying them by the megabyte.
How to turn it on
- In Settings and activity, open the time-management section (Your time on Instagram or Time spent, depending on version).
- Set a daily limit, or turn on the break reminder at an interval you will actually respect.
- On iOS, add a backstop with Screen Time app limits. On Android, use the Digital Wellbeing app timer for Instagram.
- Treat the reminder as your signal to close the app until you are on Wi-Fi.
What you give up
The infinite scroll, on the bus. Which is the point. A timer is a blunt instrument, and it is also the only one on this page that touches the actual driver of your consumption rather than the efficiency of it.
3. Switch on your phone’s own data mode
What it does
Instagram’s setting governs Instagram. Your operating system’s setting governs everything, including the in-app browser that opens when you tap a link in a Story, which is a genuine and under-noticed drain. iOS Low Data Mode and Android Data Saver both throttle background transfer and ask apps to fetch less.
How to turn it on
- iOS: Settings, then the cellular section (labelled Mobile Service, Cellular or Mobile Data depending on version and region), then Cellular/Mobile Data Options, then turn on Low Data Mode. On dual-SIM devices, set it per line.
- Android: Settings, then Network & internet, then Data Saver, and turn it on. Paths vary by manufacturer; Samsung places it under Connections and Data usage.
What you give up
Automatic photo backup and app updates pause on cellular. Some apps delay notifications. If you rely on your phone as a working device, add the exceptions you need rather than switching the whole thing off again.
4. Set media quality to the lower option, not the highest
What it does
Recent builds separate how much data you use from what quality you request. There is a media quality control offering something like a data-saving option, a default, and a high-resolution option. If a previous owner of your habits set it to high resolution, you are asking every video for the biggest version your connection can carry.
How to turn it on
- Go to Settings and activity, then Data usage and media quality.
- Under the viewing or media quality group, choose the data-saving option rather than the high-resolution one.
- If your version shows only a High resolution media switch, set it to Never or to Wi-Fi only.
What you give up
Visible softness on a large, bright display, mostly in fast-moving video. On a phone held at arm’s length, the difference is smaller than the saving.
5. Turn off highest-quality uploads
What it does
This one runs in the opposite direction from everything else, and people forget it exists. Uploading is data. A minute of Reel at maximum quality can outweigh a long viewing session, and if you post daily, this is where your allowance goes.
How to turn it on
- Open Settings and activity, then Data usage and media quality.
- Turn off Upload at highest quality (some versions: Upload at highest quality under a Media upload quality heading).
- If you post professionally, leave it on and post on Wi-Fi instead. That is the better answer for a working account.
What you give up
Your uploads get compressed harder. For a brand account that is a real cost, not a cosmetic one, so treat this as a switch you flip based on where you are rather than one you set once.
6. Restrict background data and background refresh
What it does
The app checks in while you are not looking: new messages, a warm feed, notification payloads. Individually small. Repeated all day, all month, it becomes a line item, which is why the per-app screen sometimes shows consumption on days you barely opened the app.
How to turn it on
- iOS: Settings, then General, then Background App Refresh, then turn it off for Instagram. To block cellular access entirely, go to the cellular section, scroll to Instagram in the app list, and switch it off. The app will then work on Wi-Fi only.
- Android: Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then the Mobile data & Wi-Fi entry, then turn off Background data. Leave Unrestricted data usage off as well.
What you give up
Notifications may arrive late or only when you open the app, and the feed loads from cold. If you run an account where response time matters, restrict background data and keep push notifications on; the notification itself is tiny.
7. Keep video calls and Live off cellular
What it does
Two-way real-time video is the heaviest thing in the app, because there is no compression trick available for content that does not exist yet. Going Live is worse again, since you are the uploader.
How to turn it on
- Decline video calls on cellular and switch to voice, or reply asking to reconnect on Wi-Fi.
- Schedule Lives for a fixed connection. If you must broadcast on mobile, keep it short and check the counter afterwards.
- On iOS you can enforce this by turning off cellular access for Instagram (see method 6), which makes the decision for you.
What you give up
Spontaneity. This is situational rather than universal: irrelevant if you never call, decisive if you do it weekly.
8. Use the mobile site for quick checks
What it does
Open instagram.com in your browser and you get a lighter surface. No background sync, less speculative fetching, and no video queued up behind the post you came to see. For checking a DM or looking at one account, the browser is the cheaper door.
How to turn it on
- Open your browser and sign in to instagram.com.
- Save it as a bookmark or home-screen shortcut so reaching for it is as easy as reaching for the app.
- On iOS, pair it with Low Data Mode; on Android, keep the browser under Data Saver’s restrictions.
What you give up
A worse experience and gaps in functionality compared with the app. This is a tool for a specific job, not a replacement.
9. Stop auto-saving your originals
What it does
This is a storage fix, and we are labelling it honestly rather than dressing it up as bandwidth. When the app keeps a copy of everything you post or record, your camera roll fills with near-duplicates, and if your gallery syncs to a cloud service, those duplicates get uploaded over your connection. That is where the data cost hides: not in Instagram, but in whatever backs up your photos.
How to turn it on
- Go to Settings and activity, then the posting or original-content section.
- Turn off Save original posts and any equivalent option for Stories or Reels.

Your local archive. Turn this off and the only copy of that Story is on Meta’s servers, which is a different kind of risk from a full phone.
What does not work when you try to reduce Instagram data usage, and why
This category is full of advice that has been copied between articles for a decade without anyone checking whether it survived the app’s rewrite. Some of it appeared in the earlier version of this very page. Correcting it is part of the job.
- Turning off notifications. A push notification is a few hundred bytes of text. You could receive them all day and not register a change in your monthly total. The reason to silence Instagram is your attention, not your allowance.
- Clearing the cache. This actively increases consumption. The cache exists so the app does not fetch the same thumbnail twice; empty it and everything downloads again. Clear it when the app misbehaves, not to save data.
- Force-quitting the app. Swiping it away does not stop it using data, and on relaunch it refetches what it had already loaded. Restrict background data instead, which is method 6.
- Third-party “data saver” and compressing VPN apps. Instagram’s media travels over encrypted connections, so a proxy cannot inspect or recompress it. What these apps can do is see which services you connect to, which is a privacy trade for no bandwidth gain. - Dark mode. Saves power on an OLED panel. Moves not one byte.
- Treating public Wi-Fi as a data strategy. It moves the traffic off your plan without reducing it, and it puts your session on a network you do not control. If you are going to use café Wi-Fi, understand what leaks: the metadata attached to your phone number alone is more revealing than most people expect, and the assessment framework behind privacy impact assessments exists because that kind of exposure is measurable. Never leave auto-join on for open networks.
- Waiting for a lighter app. Instagram Lite is only released in certain regions, so it may not appear in your app store at all. Use the mobile site instead.
Does Instagram use a lot of data? What actually drives the number
Yes, more than a photo app should, and the reason is that Instagram stopped being a photo app years ago.
Here is what moves your consumption, roughly in order of impact:
- Video minutes versus still minutes. A Reel is a video stream. A photo post is a compressed still that arrives once. Ten minutes in Reels and ten minutes scrolling a friend’s photos are not comparable events.
- Autoplay and preloading. The app fetches video you have not watched yet so it plays instantly when you reach it. Scroll fast and you pay for clips you never saw.
- Resolution and connection speed. Adaptive streaming gives you the best quality your link can carry. A strong 5G signal will serve you a bigger file than a weak one, for the same clip. Faster connection, bigger bill.
- Uploads, not just downloads. Posting a minute of video at highest quality can move more data than a long viewing session. Stories and Reels you publish count too.
- Session length and re-watching. The app caches, but cache gets evicted. Loop the same Reel across three sessions and you may fetch it more than once.
- Video calls and Live. Real-time video in both directions is the heaviest thing the app can do per minute.
Which is why “Instagram is consuming too much data all of a sudden” usually has a behavioural explanation rather than a technical one. Same app, different habit, or a new phone on a faster network delivering higher-bitrate video to the same eyes.
How to check your own Instagram data usage
Your phone already counts this. Two minutes of reading beats any average someone else published.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings and tap the cellular entry (Mobile Service, Cellular or Mobile Data, depending on version and region).
- Scroll to the app list. Each app shows the data it has used for the Current Period, with Instagram in alphabetical position.
- Note the period. iOS counts from whenever the statistics were last reset, which may be years ago, so the number can be meaningless until you fix that.
- Scroll to the bottom, tap Reset Statistics, and note today’s date. Come back at the end of your billing month and you have a real figure for your habits.
Android
- Open Settings, then Network & internet, then the entry for your SIM or Internet.
- Tap App data usage (some devices: Data usage, then Mobile data usage) and find Instagram in the ranked list.
- Use the date selector to match your billing cycle rather than the default window.
- Tap Instagram to split foreground from background traffic. If the background figure is large, method 6 is your fix.
- While you are there, set a data warning and limit so the OS interrupts you before your carrier does.
The ten-minute test
If you want a number that describes you rather than a stranger, run this. Turn Wi-Fi off. Reset your iOS statistics, or note the current Android figure for Instagram. Use the app the way you normally use it for ten minutes, then stop and read the counter. Do it once with the reduced-data setting off and once with it on. Now you know what that toggle is worth on your device, your connection and your feed, which is the only version of this measurement that means anything. The same principle applies to any system where you would rather measure locally than trust a distant average, and it is the logic underneath processing data at the edge instead of shipping it somewhere else first.
Your carrier’s app is a third source. It bills you, so its counter is the one that decides the argument, and it usually breaks usage down by day.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Instagram using so much data all of a sudden?
Usually one of four things. You have started spending more time in Reels, which is video rather than stills. You have a new phone or a stronger signal, so adaptive streaming is serving higher-bitrate video for the same viewing. An app update reset or introduced a setting, so the data option you had enabled is now off. Or your photo backup app is syncing the copies Instagram saves to your camera roll. Check the per-app screen described above and compare foreground with background traffic; that split usually identifies the culprit in seconds.
How can I reduce data storage on Instagram?
Storage and data are different problems, and this question is about the first. Turn off Save original posts so the app stops duplicating what you publish into your camera roll. Clear the app’s cache occasionally through your phone’s app settings, accepting that the next session will re-download some of what you deleted. On Android you can also use the Storage screen for Instagram to clear cache without clearing app data, which would sign you out. If the app’s footprint is still large, uninstalling and reinstalling resets it, and it costs you a fresh download.
How much data does Instagram use in 30 minutes?
Anywhere from a few megabytes to several hundred, and anyone quoting you a single figure is quoting their own session rather than yours. Thirty minutes of reading captions and looking at photos over a weak connection is a small transfer. Thirty minutes of Reels at high resolution on fast 5G, with preloading enabled, is a different order of magnitude. That is why this guide sends you to your phone’s own counter. Run the ten-minute test above, double it, and you will have your own thirty-minute number, which is worth more than any published average.
Does Data Saver on Instagram reduce quality?
Mostly it changes when media loads rather than how good it looks. The reduced-data setting stops video preloading over cellular, so clips fetch when you reach them and you see more buffering. Photo quality is not the target. Playback quality can still drop, because a video starting from nothing on a slow connection will begin at a lower bitrate and climb. If you want to control quality directly, that is the separate media quality or high-resolution setting described in method 4, and the two do different jobs.
Does Instagram use data when you are not using it?
Yes, if you let it. Background refresh fetches messages and warms the feed while the app is closed, and notification delivery involves a small amount of traffic regardless. The volume is modest per event and adds up across a month. Turn off Background App Refresh on iOS or background data on Android, per method 6, and the app’s consumption drops to what you deliberately spend.
