The Google Summer of Code is a global program, funded by Google, that provides funding for students to write code for various open-source software projects including R. In 2008, four projects were selected for funding and resulted in improvements to R's documentation system and PostgreSQL integration.
For the 2009 Summer of Code, the R Foundation is looking for potential mentors and ideas for student projects. Manuel Eugster is collecting submissions for the R Foundation, and a number of interesting ideas have already been submitted. Submissions are due by March 10 as described in Manuel's post to r-devel.
