Years ago, the VP of computer operations at a phone company told me that IT used to be simple: a dumb terminal talking to a mainframe computer. Now PCs talk to networks of computers and computers talk to other computers to accomplish the myriad tasks required of the wired world. If any link in that chain of networks and computers goes down, the whole thing can collapse like a house of cards.
