There are many reasons businesses are reevaluating how they test their systems as threats become more automated and persistent. Keep reading to learn more.

How AI Strengthens Penetration Testing Practices

Steve Morgan, Editor-in-Chief for Cybersecurity Magazine, reports that roughly 75% of companies conduct penetration tests for compliance or security reasons, with 51% of those firms outsourcing the work to third parties. There are clear cost and coverage pressures that come with relying on external testers alone. Another thing many teams face is limited testing windows that miss subtle weaknesses. These conditions set the stage for AI-based tools that can run continuously and flag issues earlier.

Jordana Alexandrea of Hostinger writes that approximately 78% of businesses globally use AI in at least one business function as of early 2026. Something that stands out is how this adoption trend naturally extends into security testing as teams look for faster feedback loops.

A study shows that 95% of cybersecurity professionals agree AI-powered security tools improve the speed and overall effectiveness of prevention, detection, response, and recovery tasks. It is clear from this consensus that testing supported by AI can surface risks sooner and reduce blind spots.

You can see how these tools fit into penetration testing by handling repetitive probing, analyzing patterns across scans, and highlighting anomalies that merit deeper review. Another thing teams gain is the ability to compare current findings against historical results to spot changes that matter. It is this continuity that makes AI-assisted testing more practical between scheduled audits.

In summary:

Penetration testing is a service that enables business leaders to validate the effectiveness of their cyber security defences, to understand the business risks and to provide evidence of compliance to regulators, insurers, investors and major customers. It is carried out by accredited professionals who apply the latest techniques and tools as used by cyber criminals, while safeguarding your systems and data.

Why UK businesses need penetration testing

For large and medium sized organisations in the UK, cyber security has moved firmly into the boardroom, demanding attention as a major risk factor in business continuity, regulatory compliance and reputation.

Successive governments have pushed to strengthen the cyber defences of every part of the UK economy and in many sectors – including critical infrastructure, healthcare, finance and defence supply chains – cyber security certifications are becoming mandatory, either in law or as a condition for acceptance onto procurement frameworks.

Whether you choose to obtain a cyber security certification, or it is mandated within your sector, penetration testing is the ultimate check of whether your theoretical defences are working as they need to.

Successfully completing – and acting on the results of – penetration testing provides compelling evidence for investors, customers and regulators that your systems, infrastructure and confidential data are properly protected against attackers and that you are compliant from a legal and insurance perspective.

What does penetration testing comprise?

Penetration testing (or ‘pen testing’) is a service that is carried out annually – or more often if circumstances require – that involves certified ‘ethical hackers’ working with your internal team to identify theoretical risks and uncover actual vulnerabilities.

Experienced penetration testing professionals apply the same knowledge, tools and techniques that are used by cyber criminals to find the chinks in your armour and gain access to your internal systems and confidential data.

Expert penetration testing services can review your cyber security from multiple perspectives, including attacks from outside your organisation or from an inside angle. They will typically probe applications which you host on your own servers as well as looking for misconfigurations that would allow your cloud-hosted software to be compromised. Pen testing can also be applied to reveal vulnerabilities in your website and any customer-facing apps.

How can you work with the findings of a pen test?

The most important deliverables from a penetration testing service are not just a list of vulnerabilities, but an evaluation of the specific risks and potential impact to the business.

A good penetration testing company will be experienced at supporting board level discussions and decision-making around risk acceptance, mitigation strategies and prioritisation of remedial action.

The testing team will also provide all the details that your IT team and software developers (internal or outsourced) require, to understand the vulnerabilities and to implement solutions.

Are there alternatives to pen testing, or automated options?

In addition to penetrating testing, many organisations use automated services to scan their network, seeking out known vulnerabilities and security flaws. This can provide immediate alerts to configuration errors, unpatched software or similar issues.

But to protect your network against the ingenuity of a determined hacker, the only viable option is to run penetration tests, which draw on the same human insights and techniques.

Does penetration testing expose my business to any risk?

If you use a reputable cyber security provider with its own team of professional penetration testers then the risk is extremely low. Penetration testers work closely with your business to understand your infrastructure and key systems, and to understand if there are any devices or subnetworks which they must stay clear of.

However, if your business relies on operation technology (OT) for factory automation or other control systems then it is best to work with a penetration testing company which has expertise in OT and knows how to work safely around critical systems.

Where can you find a trusted supplier for penetration testing?

Penetration testing is an established part of the cyber security industry and there are a number of accreditations you can look out for. CREST (Council of Registered Ethical Security Testers) accreditation is one such seal of approval, which confirms that your chosen pen testing provider is competent, ethical and follows the approved methodology widely accepted within the industry.

Penetration testing experts may also be approved by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), an official UK government body. Look for companies that are assured under the NCSC CHECK scheme to provide penetration testing, and whose employees are registered as CHECK Team Leaders or CHECK Team Members.
