As all aspects of the biomedical research lifecycle become digitalized, it can be analysed for additional information and new insights. Philip Bourne, Associate Director for Data Science at the US National Institute of Health explains the importance of Big Data for the Biomedical industry. Data is created everywhere, ranging from when researchers taking notes in the lab to different scans made in different projects. This data creation facilitates discovery of new insights at minimal costs.

As all aspects of the biomedical research lifecycle become digitalized, it can be analysed for additional information and new insights. Philip Bourne, Associate Director for Data Science at the US National Institute of Health explains the importance of Big Data for the Biomedical industry. Data is created everywhere, ranging from when researchers taking notes in the lab to different scans made in different projects. This data creation facilitates discovery of new insights at minimal costs.

With the different health institutes starting to collect massive amounts of data, it offers to possibility to combine and cross-analyse different data sets across different health institutes in order to find new insights that potentially could save lives. Although currently there is not yet an infrastructure created that allows for such easy sharing of data and information, the first policies have been created. In addition, there are different initiatives going on to improve public access of research data created by the Federal US government and other organisations. When the infrastructure is available, Big Data offers massive possibilities for the Biomedical industry in cross-analysing all available data.
