The further we continue into the future, the more innovation we see. In fact, every year boasts more innovation over the previous year, specifically in the technology field. Such examples of overwhelmingly important tech advances are automobiles, airplanes, and even smartphones. But, it has been quite some time until the last realgame changing idea was brought to life. There have been some false alarms though. For example, it is true that cloud computing, on a macro level, significantly upgraded IT professionals’ efficiency across the board. It is also true that it was a major development at the time. However, it wasn’t an eye-popping transformation that revolutionized lives across the globe. Perhaps it reformed the industry, and that’s great, but still – it didn’t affect most people’s day to day lives. But don’t fret, because the latest technological innovation is set to hit the public market within the next few years: the Internet of Things. The truth is that the Internet of Things (IoT) is already being used by the public, though only by a very small percentage of people. The majority of the world’s population don’t have access to it yet. Furthermore, the technology is still in its “diaper” years. However, what makes the IoT so unique is that while the potential developmental growth is enormous, the current existing framework is already lightyears ahead of any other technological revolutionary product when it first started (the smartphone, for example).

Why IoT is Different

Generally speaking, when a new revolutionary product is released, the innovativeness is limited to a specific category. For instance, the first Apple iPhone transformed the cell phone market. However, it was limited to that segment only. The Internet of Things, on the other hand, can and will affect any electrical device in the world (assuming said device will have IoT compatibility). Another way in which the IoT is much different is that it moves around over several points of interaction and usage. Powered by the internet, it runs by using code, software and programming language but manifests itself via actual devices.

IoT In Layman’s Terms

If you truly think about it, there are already billions of devices worldwide connected to the internet, with billions more expected to be connected over the coming years. For these devices, all we need is to tap into the IoT framework to get started. Here’s a simple example of how IoT can help someone. “John Doe” experiences frequent seizures. He constantly needs to be monitored. As we all know, easier said than done, especially if John Doe lives alone. With the IoT, “John Doe” can now wear some form of a wearable device, perhaps in a watch form, which would monitor all of his vitals in real time and transmit them back to his doctors. Additionally, the doctors could physically talk to John Doe through the device and send instructions in the case they find anything wrong. The above example shows how one tiny subdivision within a sizable healthcare market could benefit from the IoT. But, it doesn’t stop there, and that’s the beauty and true “game changing” nature of the Internet of Things. It will affect virtually all industries that offer physical devices – ovens, dishwashers, vaccum cleaners, etc. – enabling them to achieve full efficiency and thus making our lives that much easier. Thus, looking at the bigger picture overall, it is likely that the Internet of Things is the biggest technological advancement ever.
