Today Cisco is launching its new email software Cisco Webex Mail, according to Ferris Research. This new e-mail system is touting substantial benefits over Microsoft Exchange including mobile support for Blackberry devices and Active Sync, large e-mail storage with 5GB of space upgradeable to 25GB, and anti-virus and anti-spam software included. Although WebEx Mail comes with its own Cisco e-mail client, it is fully compatible with Microsoft Outlook without having to install any plugins. The e-mail system is based on the PostPath e-mail system, which Cisco acquired September 18th, 2008.

Cisco’s goal is to achieve an innovative, rich, and integrated suite of applications. Plans are underway to introduce instant messaging, voice presence, online meetings, team workspace, social and work directories, social networking, news, and blogs. A web client is also planned for the future. Cisco has prototypes of these services available today and the system is continuing to evolve. Stay tuned as Cisco offers some stiff competition for Microsoft Exchange.
