ImageThe new iPhone 6 is out and already receiving some impressive reviews from publications and Apple fans. The device, along with its counterpart the iPhone 6 Plus, has been selling extremely well, with more than 10 million units sold in the first week of release. While reviews have been glowing, one complaint that some reviewers have about the new device is that the basic model only has 16GB storage — the same as the entry-level iPhone 5. However, the new iPhone utilizes cloud storage more effectively, allowing a user to store all data in the cloud and access it from any of their devices.

Getting to Know iCloud

Apple’s cloud storage solution is known as iCloud. After activating a new iPhone 6 and updating it to the latest version of iOS, you will be prompted to turn on iCloud. You can also access this option through the Settings icon on the iPhone’s Home screen.

All users need to enter an Apple ID to activate iCloud. This secure log-in provides access to all Apple services, including the App Store, iTunes, and iCloud. Many iPhone owners will already have an Apple ID that they used to purchase media from the iTunes store. If you don’t, then you can register an Apple ID when you sign up with iCloud.

Keeping the Apple ID Safe

Recently, the iCloud service hit the headlines, but not in a good way. Hackers broke into celebrity accounts and stole revealing photographs, which were later released to the public. This scandal led to concerns about the security of iCloud. You can protect yourself by following a few basic security rules.

First, choose a secure password that contains upper and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers, and that is not based on an obvious word, such as your name. Second, make sure that the email address that you used to register your Apple ID is secure, as a hacker could gain access to your Apple ID through your email account. Finally, consider using two-step verification to confirm your identity when you make changes to your account, sign in via a new device, or make a purchase.

How Much Cloud Storage Does the iPhone 6 Provide?

Each user gets 5GB of cloud storage space on iCloud for photos, videos, and personal files. This space is in addition to the unlimited cloud storage space that Apple provides for music, movies, books, and TV shows purchased through iTunes. You can also use Apple’s subscription service to get more cloud storage space.

You can authorize up to 10 devices to access the iCloud service, including your iPhone, iPad, or iPhone Touch. Both Macs and PCs can also connect to iCloud, although the set up process is a little different in each case.

What Cloud Storage Services Does iCloud Offer?

The iCloud Drive service allows you to access and edit documents that you are working on, such as spreadsheets or presentations, from your iPhone 6 or any other authorized device. If you create or edit these documents using an iCloud-enabled app on your iPhone 6, they will automatically be uploaded to cloud storage, so you can access the latest version from anywhere.

Your iPhone 6 can automatically upload photos and videos that you take with your phone to cloud storage, avoiding the possibility of them being lost if something goes wrong with your phone. To toggle this service on or off, navigate to the iPhone 6’s iCloud settings, tap photos, and select the option to turn My Photo Stream on or off.

In summary, the iCloud service is an extremely useful feature of the iPhone 6. This cloud storage solution gives users up to 5GB of storage space for free and can automatically provide access to their photos, videos, and work-related documents on all their devices.
