TwitterOn his Twitter usage, Dave Fleet (@davefleet) told Toronto City-TV reporter Kris Reyes, “You can learn a lot from conversations.”

Talking in the studio Friday about the rising awareness of Twitter in the wake of recent sign-ups by Oprah and Larry King–interspersed by a Skype interview with Danny Brown (@dannybrown)–245 TV viewers called a station hotline and keyed that Twitter is a fad. Only 45 viewers said Twitter is not a fad.

Referring to a Twitter poll crowdsourcing thoughts on conversations with 140 characters:

  1. Erin Bury
erin_bury @davefleet One of my fave descriptions is that Twitter is like an online CB radio – you can tune into other people’s channels. #citytwitter 17 Apr 2009 from TweetDeck
  2. Mike Dancy
selltoronto_com #citytwitter I’d describe twitter as a great way to get points of inspiration and informative links. It can be a vanity addiction though. 17 Apr 2009 from Tweetie
  3. Bill Smith
wbsmith200 @davefleet Before I joined, I called Twitter “Blogging for the ADD.” Now I see it as a sharing of thoughts and information #citytwitter. 17 Apr 2009 from TweetDeck in reply to davefleet
  4. Michelle Corsano
mcorsano #citytwitter Twitter is keeping the pulse on what and who you care about 17 Apr 2009 from TweetDeck
  5. ryanmerkley
ryanmerkley @dafefleet A direct line to anyone willing to listen. As relevant or irrelevant as we make it. #citytwitter 17 Apr 2009 from web
  6. Kevin Grout
kevingrout @davefleet Keeps my finger on the pulse of my industry: learn from leaders, impart to others. Great communications tool. #citytwitter 17 Apr 2009 from web
  7. Billy Nab
southplatte @dannybrown Twitter simply rocks at finding work, finding friends, business contacts and creating awareness 4 good causes #citytwitter 17 Apr 2009 from TweetDeck in reply to dannybrown
  8. sarah_millar
sarah_millar @KrisReyes Ppl may be upset City uses Twitter, but it always has had conversation with viewers. This is a new way to do it #citytwitter 17 Apr 2009 from web in reply to KrisReyes

Will Twitter continue to be a conscious exploration of marketing and communication, or lose its base and fade away?

Kneale Mann opines:

We’ll see what happens once all this buzz raises the price tag for anyone who wants to eventually buy the channel. The early adopters are certainly tweeting about the many downsides of Twitter becoming the mainstream. That’s what early adopters do.

If you live on the fringe, don’t expect a crowd. And if it shows up, don’t be shocked. What you were talking about before the masses arrived may actually gain traction and (shock horror) popularity.

Coming from someone who’s tweeted and reciprocally blog commented with Danny and Dave, it was a pleasant surprise seeing their real-time gestures and hearing their voices for the first time.
