According to recent studies Anderson Analytics has conducted among the US Online population we have approximated use of social networking at about 40%. In terms of popularity, MySpace is actually still in the lead at around 30%, followed by Facebook at about 20%. LinkedIn has about 4% penetration and all others including Twitter are used by less than 4%.

Therefore I’ve been amazed that lately there  seems to be a lot of renewed interest in Twitter both in the news as well as among market researchers in the Next Gen Market Research board on LinkedIn.

I signed up for a Twitter account some time ago here http://twitter.com/TomHCAnderson  (feel free to friend/follow me). But haven’t really used it much. I’m just starting to get back into it a bit now as I’m curious to see how useful it may be for text mining/market research, as well as to better understand the types of users vis-à-vis other networks.

For those of you also interested in getting into/learning more about twitter and setting up an account, or even if you, like me, have an account and want to energize it a bit I highly recommend reading one of Guy Kawasaki’s blog entries about it here: How to Use Twitter as a Twool. Guy has been a strong proponent of Twitter for quite some time now.

On a side note, ever since I interviewed Guy on this blog last year I’ve tried to stay in touch with him and what he has been doing online.  One of his passions is Alltop, a “digital magazine rack” of popular topics. These are great for anyone who blogs or just wants to keep on top of industry news. Some of these may interest you:

Also, getting back to the original purpose of this post, please do let me know if there are any specific tweeters related to market research worth following?
