In the last decade, companies have seen new business opportunities thanks to the advancement in technology. However, these technologies can also pose extreme threats to valuable data of businesses that not only breach their confidentiality and trade secrets, but cause them to lose millions. Along with technology, employees pose equal cyber security threats of company data. For instance, in a recent SolarWinds study, untrained employees are noted as the largest threat at federal agencies (53%). As such, cyber security is a crucial issue for all businesses.

There are many advantages of cyber security, such as it protects systems from various worms, spyware, viruses and other unwanted programs. However, the biggest advantage of cyber security is that it protects vast amount of valuable data that has been collected over the years from theft. But cyber security tools may not completely protect data all the time. It can instead make you systems slower. This could also lead the owner who has authorization to be unable to access data from software malfunctions or changes in computer network systems. In addition, cyber security can be costly due to upgrading systems and adding new security programming.

Instead of upgrading your software and opting for expensive methods of data security, you can protect your data in other ways. The best way is to start with choosing a password for your confidential files. Make sure that the password to your files is almost twelve characters long and is a combination of symbols, numbers and capital letters. Do not share your passwords with anyone and regularly change your passwords. In addition, make sure that your data is not being accessed by employers who are not authorized to use it. Know who has access to the data at all times.

Another important factor is to save only the information that is required and essential. This way, you’ll be at a lower risk of facing any cyber threats. You must also regularly evaluate the people who have authorization to sensitive data. In case of employee change, make sure the right personal has access and delete access to terminated employees.

Lastly, another way data should be protected is through employee security training and official protocol to follow if they detect any security risk to company data. This way, you creates a system of checks and balances that inform the company about security breaches at the earliest moment. More awareness of employee actions lead to less mistakes and therefore, a significant decrease in security breaches.

There is a strong connection between data collection and cyber security when proper cyber security tools are used. If a company has an effective data security policy in place, then it is highly unlikely that the data is at any risk of being stolen or hacked.
