Forrester put out its Enterprise Data Management Q2 2009 report a few days ago, you can buy it from Forrester but it also seems to now be available for free from Microsoft here.  I don’t actively seek out these reports as they usually just re-enforce common knowledge (this one was no exception), however as it turned up I managed to find some time on the weekend for a quick read through.

Few surprises in this report, but some key mentions are:

  • DBMS market expected to grow 8% annually
  • IBM, Microsoft & Oracle own 88% of the DBMS market (by revenue)
  • Current market estimated at $27 billion, $32 billion by 2013
  • IBM, Ingres, Microsoft, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Sybase, and Sun Microsystems named as vendors with credible enterprise database platforms
  • 90% of enterprises have more than 1 DBMS but most prefer to have one “primary” DBMS

So for me the interesting reflective thoughts I had are:

  • Open source database platforms are having a noteworthy impact, however not a significant impact on primary vendor revenues.
  • Despite all the wins that new database vendors like Netezza, Greenplum, Vertica, Aster Data, etc have been having, their impact is still a mere drop in the ocean in terms of the entire database market.
  • Despite the Global Economic Crisis database market revenues have continued to grow pretty consistently YOY.  This has got to be good news for all those actively starting up in this market, and also good news for those investing in this market.

One of the few controversial statements I thought I would highlight is:

“Ingres: Best open source database but lacking in visibility”
