Google offers businesses fast access to multiple cloud databases

  • Dive Brief:

    • Google launched Cloud Spanner, a fully managed database that the company says “combines the transactional consistency of a traditional database with the scalability and performance of a NoSQL database.”
    • Google uses Spanner internally to support “tens of millions of queries per second.” Spanner also runs the company’s AdWords and Google Play services.
    • Cloud Spanner, will be useful for companies that need millisecond-level consistency in their databases worldwide, Nick Heudecker, a research director at Gartner, told PC World.

    Dive Insight:

Recent studies indicate businesses are more commonly choosing to work with more than one cloud provider to meet multiple needs. The survey of 314 public cloud customers by Cowen & Co. found the typical public cloud customer uses 2.86 of the six service providers asked about in its survey, which include Google, Rackspace, Amazon Webs Services, IBM, VMware and Microsoft. More than half of the respondents indicated they were planning to use an additional public cloud vendor.

In response, tech companies are putting more effort behind hybrid cloud offerings. In September, Dell EMC and Hewlett Packard Enterprise both announced closer collaborations with Microsoft focused around new integrated systems and services for Microsoft’s Azure Stack software, while VMware and IBM announced a hybrid cloud partnership in August. Now it’s Google’s turn.
