I’m really pleased that an article I wrote, “5 real-world uses of big data”, has been published in the widely-read technology blog GigaOm. In the article, I review five examples of using data science techniques and R to make sense of some large real-world data sets:
- Drew Conway’s analysis of the Afghanistan attacks data released by Wikileaks
- Benetech’s use of R to identify genocides
- The many uses of R for sabermetrics
- How NIST used R to respond to the BP oil spill
- How CardioDX used Revolution R to develop a test for coronary heart disease
These are all great real-world examples of R applications, and I’m glad GigaOm was able to give them all some wide exposure. As I wrote in the article:
These are but a few brief examples of the exciting work that’s being undertaken in the rapidly growing discipline of data science. More and more, data analysis is being relied on to provide context for critical business decisions, a trend that promises to increase as data sets grow larger and more complex and scientists continue to push the limits of statistical innovation.
