IEEE Big Data Conference 2017 to Highlight Challenges, Opportunities

4 Min Read

Since 2013, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has held annual big data conferences to highlight changes and opportunities in a rapidly growing field. The IEEE Big Data Conference of 2017 is scheduled to be held from December 11-14 in Boston.

Participation at the IEEE big data conferences has grown significantly over the past four years. The IEEE Big Data Conference of 2017 had 400 participants, while last year’s event had 900. This year, over 1,000 members are expected to attend.

What Will the IEEE Big Data Conference of 2017 Cover?

The exact format of the event is still open to change, but the IEEE intends to discuss the following topics:

  • Big Data Science and Foundations
  • Big Data Infrastructure
  • Big Data Management
  • Big Data Search and Mining
  • Big Data Security, Privacy and Trust
  • Big Data Applications

Over 100 different topics are expected to be covered over the three-day period.

The itinerary of the IEEE Big Data Conference of 2016 can be found on the Drexel University website. This year’s event should mirror it in most respects. The event should lead off with a 60 keynote speaker and delve into workshops shortly thereafter.

A number of prominent keynote speakers addressed the conference last year:

  • Guruduth S. Banavar, Vice President and Chief Science Officer, Cognitive Computing, IBM
  • Elisa Bertino, Purdue University, USA
  • Jiawei Han, Abel Bliss Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
  • Chaitanya Baru, NSF, USA
  • Michael Stonebraker, Paradigm4/MIT, USA

The IEEE hasn’t listed the names of most of this year’s keynote speakers yet. Dr. Carla E. Brodley, the Professor and Dean of the College of Computer and Information Science for Northeastern University is the only known keynote speaker at this time.

Some keynote speakers may not be confirmed until a couple of weeks before the event. However, the IEEE is expected to invite some more high-profile experts to speak before the attendees. We will try to update this post as more keynote speakers are confirmed.

Opportunities for Big Data Experts to Present their Research

Research in the field of big data is growing at a remarkable pace. The IEEE wants to highlight cutting edge research in the field at the next big data conference.

“The 2017 IEEE International Conference on Big Data (IEEE Big Data 2017) will continue the success of the previous IEEE Big Data conferences. It will provide a leading forum for disseminating the latest results in Big Data Research, Development, and Applications.

We solicit high-quality original research papers (and significant work-in-progress papers) in any aspect of Big Data with emphasis on 5Vs (Volume, Velocity, Variety, Value and Veracity), including the Big Data challenges in scientific and engineering, social, sensor/IoT/IoE, and multimedia (audio, video, image, etc.) big data systems and applications.”

The IEEE is especially interested in reviewing the findings of leading big data scientists, professors and chief information officers of leading organizations.

Who Can Attend?

The IEEE hasn’t listed the registration requirements yet. The event may be closed to members of the big data profession, but they may allow interested CS students to attend. We haven’t been able to find any details on registration costs yet (they may not be set yet), but will confirm when we do.

If you have the opportunity to participate at this conference, we strongly recommend you register. This can be a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn more about the growing field of big data. It can also be a great opportunity to network with leading experts in the field.
