In my last post on Actionable Information Management Principles: People, I presented my principles and actions related to people. There are 5 principles related to people:

  • Principle #1 – Information Is An Asset
  • Principle #2 – Information is Shared
  • Principle #3 – Information Must Be Available
  • Principle #4 – Fact-based Decision Making
  • Principle #5 – Information Improves Our Clients Life

Further to my last post, here are my principles and actions related to process.

Principle #6 – Business Requirements Drive Information Management and Solution Design

Business Driver

Information Management is an important creator of value that must be understood and not treated as a ‘black box’

Actions

  1. Know the business question(s) that you’re trying to answer
  2. Leverage what exists in your current information infrastructure and strengthen existing structures wherever possible
  3. Focus primarily on what’s needed by the business
  4. Think about where the information is coming from, who owns it, and why they should give you the information needed

Principle #7 – Harnessing information and intelligence is a corporate priority

Business Driver

Information has not only an intrinsic value in and of itself, but also it is the key to increasing the value of all assets owned by the organisation

Actions

  1. Design our core business processes to embed good information management practice and reduce duplication and re-work for our staff. Information management will be embedded into our business processes

Principle #8 – A common business and technical language is essential

Business Driver

Information costs money and a common language about it is needed in order to have effective storage, retrieval and sharing of information

Actions

  1. Both unstructured and structured data must have a common definition throughout the Company to enable sharing of data – especially for performance management and consolidated reporting. A common vocabulary will facilitate communications, enable dialogue to be effective and facilitate interoperability of systems.

Principle #9 – Information management requires large step change and long haul commitment

Business Driver

Change is a feature of the business environment and the rate of change is increasing. It is complex and that is not a reason for inaction

Actions

  1. Develop a National Information Management Strategy and Roadmap

Principle #10 – Comply With Our Statutory Requirements

Business Driver

We operate within a complex web of regulation that requires effective information management

Actions

  1. Put appropriate governance in place to ensure that State, Federal and international requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley are complied with.

Over the next few days my posts will cover the remaining 2 categories:

  1. Technology
  2. Content.
