On Big Data and the Internet of Things: Two Sides of the Same Coin?

Hi Ronke,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I noticed that, too - i.e., the conference seemed to draw a lot of European regulators. It makes me wonder if the U.S. was there. But you're exactly right. As we move into this IoT era, both man and machine will be generating a lot more data. As several studies have shown, folks aren't as concerned about the creation and collection of data as much as they are about the usage of their data. We think we have data security and privacy issues now. My opinion? "We ain't seen nuthin' yet!" Domestically and internationally.

On The White House Recently Completed a Study on Big Data Privacy: Do You Care?

Thanks, Jaap! Yes, this week I have two security-related posts coming out - the one you mentioned comes out on Friday and a new one here: "If You Think Data Security is IT's Responsibility, Think Again." Thanks for sending along the link to the CMS cloud computing standard. There's no doubt that adding "cloud" to the data discussion amplifies both the privacy and security issues.

On The White House Recently Completed a Study on Big Data Privacy: Do You Care?

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your comment and link to your related blog post. (I just left a comment there.)

The picture that often comes to mind are folks exclaiming that the "Beast" (the internet, Facebook, Google, etc.) is getting too big and doing "bad" things. Yet, they keep feeding the Beast - freely - with their status updates, posts, comments, reviews, photos, and search requests. To stop the Beast in its tracks, we could stop feeding it - but that's a limited and not-very-realistic solution for many of us. Thus, we are resigned to working through the art and science of taming this global Beast.

It's a messy job, but I, for one, am enjoying the adventure!

On 60 Minutes Got It Wrong: Data Brokers Aren’t Evil

Thanks for your comment and links, Barbara. I love the name of your blog - Medical Quack!

You're exactly right. This discussion applies to more than just data brokers, but they're a good place to start when talking about big data monetization. As this Big Data MOPS (monetization, ownership, privacy, security) blog series continues (it's still wet behind the ears!), I look forward to getting your perspective. You clearly understand the issues, especially when it comes to healthcare data.

Thanks again and have a great 4th of July weekend!

On 60 Minutes Got It Wrong: Data Brokers Aren’t Evil

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed the article. Sorry about the broken link. Try this one: https://aboutthedata.com/

It would be interesting to learn more about the audience Acxiom is attracting. If I learn anything more, I'll write about it in a future post. Great idea!

Happy 4th of July!
